Motors do die, but they usually announce it: grinding, straining on the last foot of travel, or a hot smell. Before anyone quotes you a new operator, the photo eyes, the safety edge, the loop, and the board should all be checked, and the enclosure should be opened to look for green corrosion on the terminals. Do you still want this gate? Sometimes the steel is fine and the design is not, or the opening needs to be wider for a truck. That is a legitimate reason to replace, and it is a different decision from whether the gate failed.

Before Storm Season

Walk the gate in late spring. Look for rust blooms at the bottom rail, check that both posts are plumb against a level, lift the latch end to feel for hinge play, and cycle the automation twice while watching for hesitation.
